Cross-disciplinary training activities

The URV offers a range of cross-disciplinary training activities that PhD students can choose to complement their scientific training.

These activities are common to all doctoral programmes. They broaden the knowledge of students, fostering generic skills and interdisciplinary relations between them.

Specific training activities

In addition to the cross-disciplinary training activities and the research training in chemistry, the doctoral programme includes a series of specific training activities (some optional and some compulsory).

Compulsory activities

  • Tutoring sessions with the supervisor
    This activity is carried out according to the supervisor's opinion.
  • Interdisciplinary seminars To achieve a broad training in scientific culture, it is considered essential for the PhD students to attend lectures and seminars (not necessarily related to their field of research), in addition to attending specialised conferences. The minimum is considered to be about six conferences per year.  
  • Group presentations
    PhD students should give oral presentations of their results in order to contribute to their training in generic competencies. Depending on the dynamics of the research group, students should give at least one presentation per year.
  • Attendance at conferences Participation in conferences in the scientific field.
    At least one conference and paper during the preparation of the thesis.
  • Publication of research results At least one publication must be accepted before the thesis defence.

Optional activities (for some PhD students it may be compulsory, depending on the research group or type of contract):

  • Project

    This activity should be carried out and assessed by the Academic Committee prior to submission of the doctoral Thesis. The aim is to assess the maturity of the PhD student. A brief project to be carried out over three years will also be presented orally. More information  

  • The ICIQ Summer School.
  • Attendance at cross-disciplinary technical training courses.
  • Participation in teaching the bachelor's degree in Chemistry.
  • Participation in courses of the Institute of Education Sciences.
  • Participation in administrative tasks and/or representative bodies.

Mobility and scientific exchange activities

The URV and ICIQ research groups ensure the material means and the adequate work conditions in their laboratories to perform the research work. With the agreement of the thesis sueprvisor, the PHD students can undertake stays abroad in other research groups. Mobility is not compulsory but, since it is an added value to the doctoral training, stays abroad are usually recommended.

If a research stay outside Spain is undertaken for a minimum of three months, and the requirements of Royal Decree 99/2011 are met, the PhD students may obtain the International Doctor Mention.

Other activities

Short informal meeting of the Academic Committee with the PhD student during the second year, to get a direct contact for a better knowledge of the PhD student scientific interests, his/her integration in the research group and in Tarragona, the Thesis progress, the potential problems found, either at the administrative level or in the research…
Scheduled from March to June during the second year. Includes a short anonymous survey with general questions.
